Then...

In 1855, a group of four Sisters of Our Lady of Charity arrived in Buffalo, New York from France and soon after began caring for the troubled and orphaned young women of the area. The Sisters began Our Lady of Charity Refuge, which was located on Best Street in Buffalo. For more than 100 years the Sisters provided care and education to young women from the Western New York area who were placed at the refuge by Family Court or the Department of Social Services. In addition to shelter, the Sisters provided housekeeping, child care and job employment skills.

In the 1960’s, the Sisters decided that more space was needed for the young women in their care. They purchased property on Howard Road in Hamburg and began to build Hopevale. Completed in 1971, the facility admitted its first resident in December of that year. The school was also moved to the Hamburg location and in July of that year, the Hopevale Union Free School District was created as a Special Act Public School District by New York State with an independent school board.

In March of 1976, the Sisters turned the operation of the agency over to a lay board of directors and hired an Executive Director. The new agency leased the property from the Sisters and began a standardized treatment procedure with established policies for the care of the young women.

By 1985, Hopevale was operating with 98 young women in placement and a long waiting list for the regular program and the special services program.

And Now...

Currently Hopevale is licensed for 94 youths and is located on a 55+acre site on Howard Road in Hamburg. The campus includes seven living units, outdoor recreation facilities, an administrative center, and the Family Activity Center.  Also part of our campus is a 42,000 square foot school complex known as the Hopevale Union Free School District (HUFSD).  One of thirteen special act school districts in New York State, our residents and HUFSD students enjoy smaller class sizes and more one on one attention and support.

The Family Activity Center, operational since June of 2001, added indoor recreational facilities for the residents and their families. A 12 bed non-secure Detention Facility opened its doors in June of 2001 accepting teenaged girls for placement until adjudication procedures are completed.

In January 2005, Hopevale began a residential treatment program for teen boys and accepted its first resident in the same month.   By serving both males and females, Hopevale is now better able to fulfill our mission of rebuilding young lives one at a time.

Hopevale received accreditation from the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA) in July of 2002. COA accreditation attests that an organization meets the highest national standards and is delivering the best quality services to the community it serves.

The majority of children placed at Hopevale come from Erie & Western New York counties. Most are young adults who have been the victims of neglect, and physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Our goal is to rebuild these young lives and return them to their homes as responsible members of society.
